November Parent Learning Event

Mindset is a simple idea discovered by Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck from decades of research on achievement and success—a simple idea that makes all the difference. In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities. Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, and sports. It enhances relationships.

Would you like to be a mentor at South Western?

Did you know that South Western School District has launched a K-12 mentoring program?

This year, South Western will be implementing a mentoring program that a dedicated group of educators and community members have been developing for the past two years.  The purpose of the mentoring program is to support struggling learners by facilitating positive, personal, and relational development in preparation for lifelong personal growth.  Our hope is that adult mentors can support learners in the areas of; organization, time management, study skills, career exploration, relationship building, and communication/social skills.

We are currently looking for dedicated and passionate volunteers, with flexibility in their personal schedules to be able to meet with learners during the school day.  Any adult who is interested in making a difference and being a positive role model is encouraged to volunteer.  Training is provided to all qualified mentors as well as continued support throughout the mentoring process.  For more information about the program, our application and screening process, and to obtain an application to be a mentor, please be in contact with one of the following individuals:
